Beak, Feather, & Bone (BFB) is a game that generates a city setting through procedural world building. This zine was one of the first I received from Zine Quest 2 and as excited and impressed as I was when I first got my hands on it, this was my first opportunity to put pen to paper under its instruction.
I am fascinated by the punk rock poetry of playing pretend. Lending the die the chance and experiencing a change in the state of play, a shared discovery, a bit of table canon for the game shared by all. Looking for narrative procedure generated by chance decided via the shiny math rocks that we all like best.
There is a rhythm to it all, an energy that hums. The rattling die the warbling cackle of the enemy taunting the players. Onslaughts of free thoughts from a mathematical facsimile of procedural strengths and weaknesses thought about thoroughly and thoughtfully.
But that brings me back to the punk rock poetry of playing pretend, of having your friends play pretend. Of writing things that help others play pretend with their friends. Doing it yourself and telling the stories that are small and the stories that are big and the stories that change depending on digits on a die checked against a table and plans plotted by players with panache.

Natum’s character work is expressive and full of motion. Their illustrations tell stories in the details of each figure, from stance and perspective to the implied action interrupted only long enough to allow the artist to capture it with their pencil.
Natum is a brilliant young artist with incredible style. There is sure to be a bright future full of elegant character design from them and I hope that Fish in the Pot is lucky enough to be able to work with them again.
The Fish in the Pot Characters collection is now available in pdf over on the Fish in the Pot itch. For the first month of launch it is on sale for 25% off the regular price! Go check it out!
Messing around with Hex Kit and the Highland Paranormal Society images for Hex Kit. Instead of doing a traditional hex crawl, I ended up doing a faction based map with a bunch of little hooks for border tensions.
Check out the Highland Paranormal Society Patreon here for cool stuff like the towers in this hex map.
Shout out to Nate Treme for the public domain snail and temple. Check out the Highland Paranormal Society Patreon here. It’s the best.
Finishing up a bunch of old half-finished projects I’ve got sitting in Affinity Publisher now that I’ve found some inspiration. Turned this old isometric map into a little annoying time-loop adventure for The Black Hack. This one could seriously frustrate your players, be sure to check in with them here and there. If they are getting tired or bored of the resets, then do some hand waving and get to one of the epic boss battles.
